THE ART OF DYING
1 x 60 BBC FOUR / BBC Arts (2010)
Filmed, Porduced & Directed by Matthew Hill
In this intimate observational film, Dan Cruickhank embarks on a confrontation with the big existential questions around death and dying aiming to discover if art can provide solace as the end draws near.
From medieval doom paintings, death masks and the battlefields of Flanders his journey is laced with deeply personal reflections on his own life and death.
After coming face to face with death in a mortuary and a harrowing encounter with his own obituary Dan concludes that the art works of others cannot provide answers only clues.
Because when we stand on the edge of life, before the infinite mystery of death, we do so alone.
